Oregon Engagement Photos

Y’all, I’m so excited to share this Oregon engagement photo session with you today!! I had the best time photographing Kirsten, Andrew, and their sweet pup Hazel and exploring a new area of the Columbia River Gorge! We lucked out with one of the warmest, sunniest days that I’ve ever experienced in March in Oregon.

Oregon Engagement Photo Locations

Oregon has an incredible amount of locations for engagement photos. The coast, the Columbia River Gorge, the eastern High Desert, and more! We decided to stick with the Columbia River Gorge for Kirsten and Andrew’s session because they live nearby and they didn’t want to travel too far during a busy season for them.

I’ve done a lot of sessions in this area. Specifically, Government Cove. And lately, it’s been OVERRUN with photographers and sessions. So I knew I wanted to find another location for Kirsten and Andrew’s session, something a little more secluded and quiet. After some google earth searching, I found this awesome little island and figured out how to get to it. I sent them coordinates and off we went!

When Should Engagement Photos Be Taken?

My favorite time of day to take engagement photos is definitely at sunset. To be honest, I’m not much of a morning person. And I find that my clients aren’t usually either. Or at least they’re not stoked on the idea of waking up and getting ready 3 hours before the sun rises haha and I don’t blame them!

A sunset engagement session allows you to take it slow. I find that getting ready during the day and driving to your destination is much calmer for sunset sessions. It also gives us that dreamy golden light on clear days, like this session!

Engagement Photos with Dogs

Are you thinking about bringing your dog to your engagement session as Kirsten and Andrew did? So many photographers immediately recommend bringing your dog along to your session. But I’ve got to say, after photographing over 50 engagement sessions, I’ve come to realize it’s not the best choice for everyone. Check out the tips below to help you decide if bringing your dog to your engagement session is the right decision for you.

  1. Your dog is well behaved, socialized, and has excellent recall.
  2. You believe that your dog will add a fun element to your session and won’t overly distract you from your partner and your photographer.
  3. The location of your session allows dogs and is dog friendly.
  4. You’re prepared to clean up after your dog during your session.
